Between 30 July and 10 August, Hobsons Bay City Council will present From within we grow, a textile installation showcasing the cultural heritage of the local Karen community at the Joel Gallery.
Mayor of Hobsons Bay Councillor Peter Hemphill said our city was home to a large multicultural community with over a third of residents born overseas. Every two years Council works in partnership with an artist and cultural community to present a multicultural arts exhibition at Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre in Altona. Past exhibitions have featured on the Greek and Maltese communities.
Cr Hemphill said the story of one of Hobsons Bays fastest growing communities was one that should be told.
I imagine most people are unaware that the Karen people are one of our fastest growing communities, he said.
